teething babyHow can you tell if your baby is teething? It can be tricky to tell if your baby’s symptoms are related to teething or if there is a problem elsewhere, if you are unsure it is well advise to consult a medical professional who can give you expert advise.

That said here we will outline a few teething symptoms that are common in the majority of babies.

The most obvious symptom is excessive drooling. When babies’ first teeth are making them selves’ known it is common for your baby to drool a lot more than usual. This can be because the baby is biting inside their mouths to try to relieve their discomfort, which causes them to dribble.

Check inside your baby’s mouth to see if you can see any sore patches or areas that are very red. As teeth come through they will cut the skin to break out which can cause discomfort inside the baby’s mouth. When checking inside your baby’s mouth ensure that your hands are clean as to not infect any areas that are sore.

Sometimes just one cheek of the baby will appear to be blushing, or look flushed and reddish, this is a common teething symptom that is easy to spot. The baby can also rub the cheek with their hands to try and comfort themselves.

Another common symptom is when babies pull on their ear, they are usually experiencing a pain similar to what we would call ear ache, as you may know, this can be very painful so treat your baby with care and love.

Teething can also cause your baby to have restless nights as they are being woken up by the pain and discomfort of their teething. Parents agree that a teething baby causes a lot of restless nights.

Symptoms similar to a common cold such as a runny nose and coughing come into play when a baby is teething. The baby having their hands in their mouths a lot more than usual could cause this. Always consult your doctor if the symptoms persist.

When a baby first starts to teeth you will notice that they become irritable, this is because of the pain caused by teething. It may be difficult for them to relax until they get more accustomed to the feeling of their teeth coming through, all babies react differently.
